One-Way Ticket
(and other comments on current events)

Friday, Nov. 17, 2006:

No, I don't think George Bush should be impeached. What I think is, we should give him a one-way ticket to Baghdad. Hand him a flak jacket, pat him on the back, and say, "George, you broke it -- you fix it."

Even if he fails utterly to quell the violence, he might learn a little humility.

In the news this week, the San Francisco School Board wants to terminate the JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps) program at local high schools. The Chronicle (which I've been reading faithfully since about 1960) thinks this is a terrible idea, because the JROTC teaches kids pride and responsibility and such things.

I'm not sure we should be supporting programs that glorify violence and teach teenage boys to follow orders unquestioningly. I'd rather see programs that would teach them to use nonviolent methods to solve conflicts, and to think for themselves. If the best we can do in teaching our children the skills they'll need in adulthood is to indoctrinate them with military values, we may as well give up. Civilization was a nice idea, but it's finished.
